African Masks
Students learned about African masks and their uses to represent animals or people in their tribes. Students researched different African masks and then designed their own clay mask based upon their research. Students learned how to construct from the slab technique to build a container in the shape of their mask. Students then sculpted the top of their mask both by attaching details or carving away details. Students chose to make their mask a container with a removable lid or to attach the mask to make a 3D form. Students then painted their masks with watercolor paint to emphasize the designs by working with contrasting colors.
