Art History Operations- a four-step approach for organizing the way you gather information about a work of art.

Art Historian- a person who studies and labels art according to common characteristics and who writes about artistic styles and movements. Art Historians probably work for an art museum, historical society, or art school and lecture and write about art for academic publications.
Art Medium- a material used to create a work of art (plural is “media)
Credit Line- a list of important facts (artists, title, date, medium, dimensions, location) about a work of art found in a textbook close to an illustration or photo.
Individual Style- an artists’ use of the elements and principles of art to express feelings and ideas.
Subject Matter- the image viewers can easily identify in a work of art.
Key words to include in your writing:
Paintings are made with: oil, acrylic, tempera, watercolor.
Drawings are made with: graphite, colored pencil, marker, ink, chalk pastel, oil pastel.
Sculptures are made with: clay, plaster, paper mache, wire, wood, cardboard, found objects
A picture is referring to: photography, digital photography
Artistic Titles: artist, painter, illustrator, animator, sculptor, photographer , designer

- DESCRIBE- Introduce the artwork by turning the credit line into a sentence. Make sure to include the artist’s name, title, date, and medium. Then describe what you see in the image.
- ANALYZE- identify the elements and principles that were used. Give specific examples of the element or how the artist created the principle. This is the artist’s individual style.
- INTERPRET – try to determine how time and place may have affected the artist’s style (usually requires in-depth research). What is the story or meaning behind the artwork? Why do you think the artist created the artwork?
